Jordan pried open the window of Remy Moreau’s small Alabama home, the hinges giving a faint creak that echoed in the silent night. He had been staking out the house for a few hours, ensuring that no one, especially the police, would come by for an unexpected visit. The darkness of the night cloaked his movements as he slipped through the window.

Inside, the house was shrouded in darkness, the only light coming from the moon casting eerie silhouettes across the room. Jordan’s heart raced, not just from the adrenaline of breaking and entering, but from what he might find. This was a crucial lead in his quest to locate Rivers, and he couldn’t afford any mistakes. Every move he made was risky now, especially since the entire law enforcement was looking for him.

He paused for a moment, allowing his eyes to adjust to the darkness. The house was still and quiet, almost oppressively so. It was as if the walls themselves were holding their breath, waiting for what Jordan might uncover.

Moving with purpose, Jordan began his search. He knew that Remy had been closely connected to Rivers, and there had to be something in this house that could point him to the killer’s whereabouts. He cautiously opened each drawer, his movements slow to minimize any sound. The soft, almost inaudible whisper of the drawers sliding open seemed amplified in the silent room, and Jordan convinced himself that even the slightest noise could betray his presence.

As he rummaged through Remy’s belongings, he couldn’t help but feel a pang of guilt. He was invading the privacy of a man who had been unwillingly drawn into a deadly game, a man whose life had ended tragically. It was wrong, but then again, Jordan Blake bent the rules many times in the past. Then, Aidan O’Reilly had been there to clean up Jordan’s foolish mistakes. Unfortunately, if the reporter was caught now, nothing O’Reilly could say would get him out of the hole he dug himself in.

But this was bigger than anything Jordan had ever investigated before. The lives of many hung in the balance, and Jordan was determined to end Rivers’ reign of terror.

Finding nothing in the kitchen or the living area, Jordan made his way to the bedroom. It was unmade, like someone had just woken during the night. On the end table was a photo of three boys, all under the age of ten. Jordan picked up the frame and studied them. All three boys, especially the middle one, had many of Remy’s facial qualities. Jordan’s heart squeezed tight. Remy was a father. He hadn’t known that. He never discussed personal affairs with him. Now, he wished he’d taken the time to learn about who Remy Moreau was. He was a man who had a whole life outside of his fear of Rivers. Jordan hoped it was a good life, for his sons’ sake. Curious, he removed the picture from the frame.
